Community Involvement

UUCOB members and friends have a strong tradition of leadership and involvement with dozens of worthy organizations in the surrounding community on the Outer Banks. You can work alongside other UUCOB volunteers to support the Beach Food Pantry, Ruthie’s Kitchen, Room in the Inn, or many other local charities.

Nancy Proctor, a member of our congregation, has developed and now maintains a “Common Ground E-News” website and newsletter, that identifies numerous opportunities for volunteering throughout our Outer Banks Community.

Common Ground E-News

Nancy Proctor, a member of our congregation, has developed an “Outer Banks Common Ground E-News” website focussed on identifying what is happening in social justice, social action and community outreach in Dare and Currituck counties.  Among other things, you will find numerous opportunities for volunteering your services to support worthwhile activities throughout the Outer Banks area.

If you would like to help and are able, please let Ellen Berg know at 261-7842 or eberg@outerbankswaterfowl.com .

Ruthie’s Kitchen

Ruthie’s Kitchen is an interfaith initiative to provide free suppers, especially to those in need, on Tuesday nights at His Dream Center in Nags Head. Each Tuesday a different congregation or community organization feeds around 40-50 people, sending several home with leftovers.

Beyond cooking: Volunteers set up and took down the tables and chairs, tablecloths and place settings, served and assisted, greeted and chatted with guests, and thoroughly cleaned up.

Thanks to all who volunteered in one way or another. Not just the food, but your presence makes such a difference to those who come to Ruthie’s Kitchen.

Watch for announcements on our website or weekly e-mail announcements calling for UUCOB volunteers to support future collective group efforts.
